We live in a highly polarized age. I have been an observer of life for many years, read voraciously about a huge range of subjects, and have lived on two continents, in both cities and small communities. This gives me a unique perspective that you will rarely find. Chances are good you’ll disagree with me, but hopefully my ideas will be of interest. Possibly they’ll change your mind about something, and possibly your comments will change mine.
In Tante Hanna Writes I have three types of material.
My essays and other writings on culture, faith and spirituality are from the position of someone raised in a far-left-leaning Jewish family who found God in her late 30’s and realized only as she approached 50 that she was politically conservative. So I understand, from personal experience, both sides.
My stories for children are written from my rather unique position. Considered too Jewish for secular publishers and not Orthodox enough for Orthodox Jewish publishers, they are accessible for all children, regardless of religious, secular, national or racial background.
Background information about Jewish practice and belief that explains information contained in the children’s stories and may clarify information in the basic adult section of this newsletter. When I started this publication this was separate from the stories, but readers commented that this confused them. As a result, I have attached this information below the related stories and removed “For parents, teachers and others” as a separate publication.
I have entered many writing contests and have received at least an honorable mention in every one I’ve entered, as well as first place in the 1991 Jewish Library Association’s Sydney Taylor Manuscript competition for a book, Reb Aharon’s Treasure, published in 1993 by Targum Press in Jerusalem. Publisher’s Weekly gave my picture book, Sleepy River, a starred review because of its beautiful language. (Philomel 1993, illus. Jeanette Winter) The stories published here will be first quality.
